Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Shop Local!

This week ushers in the beginning of the mad-dash that is the holiday shopping season.  The day after Thanksgiving in the US is known as “Black Friday”, named for the attempt by retailers to get their profit margins “back in the black” by offering deep discounts and super early and extended shopping hours.

I’ve seen a lot of campaigns this year, encouraging folks to buy local and support the local economies.  I totally support this idea, but I’m also someone who prefers to do as much of my holiday shopping online as I can.  Cyber Monday, is the internet answer to Black Friday, but it doesn’t help my neighbor the baker if I buy pastries online.

I’ve been looking for a list of local shops with websites that I could help promote in order to give my friends and family an easy choice when it comes to their online holiday gift buying.  Currently I can’t seem to find a list like this.  So if you know of a great NH retailer who has an awesome website, and especially if they’re featuring holiday deals, feel free to post it in the comments here.  I’ll do my best to compile a list over the next several weeks.

I’m finally back up and running after a record breaking snow storm hit the North East United States on October 29th.  Our dog Shelby woke the family to let us a know a 70 foot tree had just uprooted itself in our yard and thankfully, missed hitting our deck by only a few inches.  Out the window lights flashed and bounced off of the snow canopy in the sky, looking like the clouds were on fire.  I got dressed and went outside with a flashlight to check for damage and was relieved to see that nothing was destroyed.  Moments later, a bright flash and an electric boom signaled the beginning of a 36 hour stretch without power.  Many in NH are on day 4 without power. Public Service of NH estimates that most should be fully restored by midnight on Friday 11/4.

The reason this storm had such an impact is because of how early in the season it arrived.  A lot of the trees still had all of their leaves, which holds onto wet snow really well.  Couple the weight of the wet snow + wind + semi-firm ground = and you get broken/uprooted trees everywhere.

I’m very thankful for the hard work of all the crews that have spent long hours away from their families in order to restore the power to ours.

Now, back to business as usual.

When everything simply comes together.

It’s been one of those weeks when bugs keep piling up in the queue, the task list seems endless, and there’s not enough time to even break for lunch let alone run any errands.

Fortunately, it’s also one of those weeks where almost everything is looking like it’s going to be wrapped up and fixed neatly by 5pm on Friday.  I don’t know about you, but for me the weekend is so much more enjoyable when I can leave work feeling a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.  This is one of those weeks!

Cheers!

A good day to do some deep dive, heads down, headphones on kind of work.

It’s a cold and rainy fall day in NH.  The perfect kind of day to put the headphones on, crank up the tunes, and get deep into my work.  This is an especially good idea today considering theyre predicting our first few snow flakes to arrive this aftenoon.
